Demopolis falls in regular season finale

The Demopolis Tigers had their seven-game winning streak snapped at the hands of 6A Wetumpka Friday night as the visiting Indians escaped with a 22-9 win.
Wetumpka improved its record to 7-3 on the season with the win while Demopolis fell to 7-3. The Tigers are still region champions and will host UMS-Wright on Friday. Tickets are $12.
The Indians got on the board at the 8:38 mark of the first half on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Johnson to Matez Wright. The PAT sailed wide left to leave the Wetumpka lead at 6-0.
After a failed fourth-down attempt by Wetumpka at its own 41, Demopolis drove into the red zone to open the second quarter. However, the Indians turned away the Tigers on a missed 35-yard field goal.
Wetumpka was driving again, but a 33-yard touchdown pass was wiped away on a holding penalty.That led to a Tiger interception inside their own 10-yard line.
The Indians relied on their defense to force a three-and-out, giving them great field position. Justin Godwin then found Kelby Walker for a 5-yard touchdown pass. The two-point try failed, but the Indians still led 12-0.
A Demopolis miscue on special teams set up Wetumpka again with a short field. Johnson scrambled from 18 yards out to give the Indians another touchdown moments before halftime. Cyrus Bullock added the extra point to give Wetumpka a 19-0 lead.
The second half was a defensive struggle, as neither team could do much in the third quarter..
Demopolis got on the scoreboard when Austin Wright tackled a Wetumpka runner in the end zone after a punt set up the Indians against their own end zone, cutting the advantage to 19-2 at the end of the third quarter.
The Tigers then were able to drive down and score a touchdown on Carlow Jones’ 5-yard touchdown run with six minutes left in the game. Jose Tellez added the extra point to cut the lead to 19-9.
Wetumpka put the game away with a solid drive leading to a Bullock field goal from 35 yards out.
Godwin sealed the win for the Indians with an interception on the Tigers’ final drive.

UMS-Wright (4-6) finished as the 4 seed in Class 5A, Region 1. They beat Leflore (25-6), Rain (15-0), Elberta (30-0) and Faith Academy (35-0). The losses came to St. Paul’s (10-3), Vigor (30-14), T.R. Miller (28-14), Citronelle (14-7), Williamson (20-9) and St. Michael Catholic (35-28).
