Farmers Market kicks into high gear

If you’re looking for fresh vegetables and other homemade goodies, then all you have to do is to show up in Town Square each Saturday morning.
The Main Street Demopolis Farmers Market has returned for its fourth year, and director Rhae Darsey said it changes each week depending on what is in season at that time. Some items that were available this past weekend included corn, peaches, blueberries, squash, jellies, baked goods, plants and soaps.
“There’s something different every week,” Darsey said. “It just depends on what’s in season at this time of year and what’s ready for harvesting. Some weeks will have one thing, and then next week, it will be completely different.”
Darsey said the farmers market is open to anyone from full-time farmers to those who have an excess of produce from their own backyard garden. Those who are full-time farmers can sign up to accept food vouchers through Alabama Farmers Market Nutrition Programs. Through this program, low-income residents can use their vouchers to purchase fresh produce at the farmer’s market.
Darsey said they attract people from all around Marengo County and beyond.
“We have a farmer who drives over here from Selma every week to participate in our farmer’s market,” Darsey said. “There’s one in Selma that they could go to, but they choose to come and be a part of ours. And we draw customers from all around the area and beyond.”
Vendors in the farmer’s market must either bring their own produce to sell or bring homemade goods to sell.
“It has to be home-grown or homemade,” Darsey said.
The event is held rain or shine. Darsey said they had to move the market to Rooster Hall on the first weekend because of the threat of rain.
In addition to the food and goodies, the market will also feature some local music and entertainment from time to time. Darsey said they are also in need of volunteers to help out with the farmers market each week.
