Three women were nominated at the Demopolis City Council meeting Thursday, April 18, to fill the Demopolis City Schools Board of Education seat being vacated June 1 by Carolyn Moore.
The council will vote at its May 3 meeting on appointing either Aliquippa Allen, Dr. Brittney Anderson or Karen Braxton to fill the vacancy.
Mayor Woody Collins said the council members had named “three very qualified nominees.”
Demopolis has received a $257,000 Rebuild Alabama Grant to repair Field of Dreams Drive, and the council approved the resolution selecting the Civic Southeast LLC project.
Organizers of two upcoming events requested the public square be designated as entertainment districts. The council approved Main Street Demopolis’ request for April 27 for a crawfish boil from noon to 5:30 p.m., and the Demopolis Area Chamber of Commerce got the go-ahead for its Wing Fling May 4.
At the last meeting, Freddie Charleston began to address the Council concerning a raw sewage problem in a ditch running from Decatur to Jefferson. Since his topic was not on the agenda, he was asked to return.
He learned at the meeting Thursday, however, that the council has no authority over water and sewer problems. The Demopolis Water Board has jurisdiction and, Collins said, has received grants to address the issue. Collins directed Charleston to get on the water board agenda and speak to its members about the problem.
Shelley Wood requested she be put on the agenda for the second meeting in May. She will speak about replacing a two-way stop at East Jefferson Street and South Strawberry Avenue with a four-way stop.
The mayor was gleeful when he announced the bill to locate the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences in Demopolis was passed by the state House unanimously.
“I was screaming and hollering in my office watching (the vote) on TV,” he said. “This is great news.”
Now the legislation goes to the Senate and, hopefully, to Gov. Kay Ivey for her signature.
The mayor announced the May 16 meeting is being postponed a week to May 23 because council members have other commitments.
