Demopolis Tigers roll past Paul Bryant

The Demopolis Tigers end their regular season and Senior Night on the right foot as they defeated the Paul Bryant Stampede 43-21 Friday.

While the first quarter passed without a score from either team, the Tigers got the ball rolling in the second quarter with Antonio Cox scoring on a 27-yard run with barely any time gone off the second quarter clock. Jose Tellez kicked the extra point though and put the Tigers up 7-0 with 11:14 to go in the quarter.

Keishawn Rowser added to the Tigers lead next on 63-yard run to the end zone with 5:57 remaining in the first half. Tellez’s PAT kick failed, leaving the score at 13-0.

The visiting Stampede got on the scoreboard with 0:42 remaining in the second quarter Brandon Gooden ran 7-yards for the touchdown. The PAT from Diego Marquez was good, and the Stampede cut into the Tigers score at 13-7.

The last score of the first half was a field goal by Tellez to put Demopolis up 16-7.

In the third quarter, the Tigers recovered a fumble and returned it for a score with 8:00 to play in the quarter. The PAT attempt was good, putting the Tigers up 23-7.

Midway through the third quarter, the Stampede scored their second touchdown when quarterback Javion Johnson completed a 39-yard pass to Z’vonte Perkins with 5:34 to play in the third quarter. The two-point conversion was good, making the score 23-15.

Cox would score again for the Tigers in the last few minutes of the third quarter when he ran it in from 2-yards out. Tellez’s extra point kick failed, leaving the score as 29-15 with 1:08 to play in the third quarter.

At the 6:21 mark in the fourth quarter, Kevin McElroy 2-yards for the score. The PAT kick was good, increasing the Tigers’ lead to 36-15.

The last score for the Tigers was on a 31-yard run by Carlow James with 3:19 remaining in the game. The extra point attempt was good, making the score 44-15.

The Stampede would get the final score of the game with 0:55 remaining when Johnson competed a 13-yard pass to Joshua Hines. Marquez’s PAT attempt failed, making the final 43-21.

This Friday, the Demopolis Tigers (8-2) will host the Carroll Eagles (4-6) in the first round of the AHSAA 5A playoffs. The Eagles come to Demopolis with a 49-48 loss to Saint James last Friday.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
