The Demopolis City Schools Foundation (DCSF) is trying something new this fall and will host a Cornhole Tournament on Nov. 2. The tournament will benefit the DCSF and the funding will go to the classroom grants program.
Margaret Anne Gilchrist, the DCSF Director, said the idea for a cornhole tournament came from wanting to reach middle school and high school students as well as families.
“The tournament is meant to be a family oriented event to get people to come together for a fun night of fun. Hopefully through this we’ll have businesses that have teams and students in some of the clubs in the schools are going to have teams,” said Gilchrist. “So it was just a new idea. We are celebrating 30 years with the foundation. I wanted to try to come up with some different ideas of ways to get people involved and know more about what we do.”
Gilchrist said that so far, the response for the tournament has been good. The funding generated from the event will go towards classroom grants for the spring semester.
“We awarded a little over $46,000 and we hope to have an even bigger round in the spring. So all of the fundraising goes directly back to the schools to help provide resources,” said Gilchrist.
Gilchrist said she is looking forward to the tournament and hopes it goes well so the foundation can continue hosting it.
“I think it’ll be fun just to have people together and having a fun night. Even if you don’t have a team, we want people just to come out and cheer on the teams. It’s something that I’m looking forward to,” said Gilchrist.
Thirty-six teams will be able to compete in the tournament and it is $50 per team. The tournament will go from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the DHS tennis courts.
