The Linden City Council is making progress towards moving City Hall to the old Alabama Power building at 111 East 8th Ave. Mayor Gwendolyn Rogers said that architect Sewell McKee with McKee and Associates has drawn up plans for renovations.

According to Rogers, McKee said he can perform some renovations to the building that might meet the specifications and the city’s funding. She also said she has had several community members ask what the council plans to do with the old City Hall building after the move.

One suggestion from the public was, rather than purchasing the building downtown, the Council could turn the old city Hall building into a Public Safety building.

City Attorney Woody Dinning said Sewell McKee has done work for the Demopolis and Linden school system and is very practical with his work. Dinning said he asked him to inspect the power company building and City Hall and give the council an estimate of what renovations would cost.

“He will send someone out to inspect City Hall and come back with an analysis of what it would take to constructional and dollar and cents wise to make it usable as a public safety building,” Dinning said.

Rogers said the Council will discuss the topic more at their Oct. 3 meeting.

The Council reviewed the proposed city budget, and after a brief executive session to discuss two items, approved the budget for the fiscal year. The two items discussed involved an additional $1,200 for the Industrial Development Board consultant, and $3,000 for the Marengo Library.

Councilmember Kelly Anthony reported that the new patrol cruisers Chief Richard Varner discussed at the Sept. 5 meeting will not be available until November.

The Linden City Council meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 4:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
