K12 Instructional Leader Wendy Joiner presented her monthly report to the Marengo County Board of Education last Tuesday, February 28.

The first thing on Joiner’s agenda was summer learning. This year’s summer learning sessions will be June 5 through June 30 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Sessions are for students in grades K-5 and registration is now open. This year’s sessions are open to any students who would like to attend.

Joiner said there has been “a great response” from faculty members and several have been willing to help with classes this summer.

Joiner also said that letters will be sent home with students who are not proficient in reading, math, or both to let parents know that it is important that their children attend.

At Sweet Water, Coach Glass’s Fundamentals of Engineering classes are collaborating with Tate Luker, SWHS librarian. The classes used codeable drones to fly obstacle courses. The assignment assessed computer science and math. Students were required to plan their flights, convert measurements from American to metric, and program the drones to fly the correct path.

Marengo High School recently received a Legacy Scholars Grant for $4,660 from the Equal Justice Initiative. The grant enabled them to bring 80 students and 6 chaperones to EJI’s Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice on February 17.

The UWA K-3 partnership workshops will focus on instructional practices in K-3 classrooms. Teachers will tour classrooms and will have collaborative planning sessions to implement new learning in their classrooms.
