Winter has finally arrived in Alabama and it’s coming in full force for Christmas. The latter half of the week will be colder than what December has produced so far with temperatures only in the 50s through Wednesday, December 21.

WSFA 12 News in Montgomery reported that the overnight lows through the middle of the week will be in the 30s. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day might see temperatures in the upper 20s. These low temperatures will be coming down from the Arctic Circle and Canada.

The worst of the cold is expected to arrive on Friday, December 23, and last through Monday, December 26. Temperatures could potentially drop to the upper teens which has not happened since December 2010.

While cold weather isn’t uncommon for Alabama, it is best to be as prepared as possible. One important thing to do is winterize vehicles and homes. Cars should have full tanks of gas, gather up extra blankets, food and water for travel. Check tire pressure and make sure they are ready for icy roads.

At home, make sure pipes are protected, and allow faucets to drip to prevent them from bursting. Check air vents for proper ventilation of heat and keep space heaters away from anything that can catch fire.

Remember to bring pets and plants inside to avoid the cold, especially Thursday through Saturday. Also be prepared for power outages. Weather services believe strong winds may accompany Thursday’s cold front, and winds could knock tree limbs down onto power lines. If a power outage occurs, make sure there is a way to stay warm either with blankets and gas or wood fireplaces.

With the holidays coming up, it is easy to forget that cold weather can be dangerous. Keep family and friends in mind throughout the week, and celebrate the holiday safely.
