National Weather Service survey teams confirmed that an EF1 tornado touched down in Marengo County in the early hours of Saturday, December 3. The storm produced winds at an estimated 110 mph, had a path length of 15.49 miles, and a path width of 525 yards. No fatalities or injuries were reported.
The tornado reportedly touched down southeast of County Road 6, southeast of Sweet Water. There was minor tree damage in the area, but as the storm moved northeast, roofs were torn from buildings and a patio overhang from a residence near Dogwood Lane and County Road 7 was also torn away.
The power of the tornado increased after crossing Hwy. 10 over Sweet Water Creek. Several trees were downed near Wayne Road and damaged an exterior wall of a manufactured home. The home was properly secured to its foundation and the roof was attached with clips to minimize the damage.
On Union Grove Road, a camper was moved several feet and more trees were uprooted. Shingles and windows were damaged on a home in the area.
Tree damage was minor across Highway 43, but it intensified again as it crossed Pillie Road and County Road 73. The tornado blew off the roof from an addition to a manufactured home along County Road 47 before breaking up before reaching Highway 25.
