During the September Marengo County Board of Education meeting, board members were recognized completing all school board governance improvement act requirements.

Chester Moore received Master Fourth Year, Rayvell Smith received Master First Year, and Freddie Charleston received Master Honor Roll.

Under the K12 Instructional Leader report, Wendy Joiner said that the Multi-Tier System of Supporters (MTSS) RTI Coordinator meeting was held in Linden on September 12 to revise the MTSS/RTI Plan. Coordinators from each school attended.

MTSS is a framework that encompasses the academic, behavior, physical, mental health, and social emotional needs to support the whole child. The group discussed team member responsibilities, instruction, intervention, and how to collect evidence of student progress.

Peer Helper Training was held at the Extension office in Linden on September 19. Over 35 students from Marengo County Schools and Linden City Schools attended. Coordinators from the individual schools trained the students on how to serve as a Peer Helper. They also learned about different campaigns that they can participate in to help the social and emotional climate of their school and community.

Career Projects will begin the first week of October in 4th and 8th grades throughout the district. These projects will be ongoing throughout the school year. Students will research careers, write a paper, create a poster, and present their information to an audience. It allows students to begin thinking about their long term career goals and the steps to achieve these goals.

The FAFSA campaign kicked off on Saturday, October 1 and the goal is for all seniors in Marengo County Schools to complete the FAFSA application by October 31, 2022.

ACAP (Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program) scores were recently released for all districts/schools across Alabama. These scores allow teachers to see how the Marengo County schools compare to other schools in the state and the Black Belt Region.

For Marengo, all schools showed improvement in ELA and Science. Sweet Water was 18th among all high schools in the state based on ELA, Math, and Science scores. Marengo High School was the second highest out of 27 schools in the Black Belt area based on 8th grade ELA scores. Seventh graders at A.L. Johnson had an increase in ELA and Science.

Out of 25 high schools in the region, Sweet Water was ranked number 1 in ELA scores, Marengo was 9th, and A.L. Johnson was ranked 17th.
