Demopolis Middle School will be hosting its annual Hoops for Hearts event, Friday, March 25, 2022 at 9:00 a.m. in the middle school gym. Hoops for Hearts is a community service learning program of the American Heart Association that teaches students the importance of developing heart-healthy habits. All students should know, for example, that physical activity is both rewarding and fun. Raising funds to support cardiovascular research and education helps save lives in their community and across the nation.
Heart disease is the nation’s #1 killer. Children are developing significant health issues that can shorten their life expectancy. Almost a third of U.S. children and adolescents from age two to nineteen are overweight or obese. Children who are obese are more than twice as likely to die before the age of fifty-five. Sixty-one percent of children from age nine to thirteen aren’t physically active outside of school.
The goal is to increase students’ knowledge of practices and methods to care for their heart. Hoops for Hearts also desires to honor those in the community who have been affected by heart disease and raise funds to support the American Heart Association’s efforts to build healthier lives.
DMS extends its thanks to the community and citizens across the country for the support for this important event. For more information concerning this event, contact the Hoops for Hearts Coordinators, Coach Bell or Coach Jamison at 334-289-4242.
