At the recent Demopolis City Council meeting on November 18, the council approved a Christmas pay adjustment for all city workers, and approved removing a billboard that was placed without permission from the city. The billboard was placed on property owned by Naheola Credit Union.

The Council voted to give all city workers a one-time-pay adjustment for Christmas. Full-time employees will receive $100 and part-time employees will receive $50.

The billboard was erected on private property without explicit permission from the city. As stated by the Council, no one has been able to get in contact with the builder, and the Council has been given permission by the owners of the property to remove it. Public Works has offered to take it down and dispose of it.

Mayor Woody Collins said no one ever asked for a building permit and did not have permission to use the private property. He said “it was a very peculiar situation.” Ashford Jackson of Public Works said they can use the lumber if the billboard is taken down. Building Inspector Julius Rembert said the lumber used for the billboard will be kept for the city to use.

Other items discussed by the Council:

• Tammy Knott was approved as the newest member of the Park and Rec Board
• Council approved request from Realtor Mem Webb to vacate a northern part of Desounettes avenue
• Council voted to change the next meeting date to Wednesday, December 1 to avoid conflict with Christmas on the River activities.

The Demopolis City Council meets on the first and third Thursdays of every month. The Council’s next meeting will be on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 5:15 p.m.
