Feathers, Fins and Fur Alabama Youth Weekend begins July 23-25 at Foscue Park in Demopolis.

The three-day event features an all encompassing itinerary, including a mandatory hunter’s safety course, archery lessons, retriever demos, duck calling, wood duck box building, camo concealment, skeet shooting, boat rides and a catfish rodeo.

Registration is $35 per person, which includes National Wild Turkey Foundation membership, Ducks Unlimited Greenwing Membership, along with meals, activities, raffles, prizes and a camp site. The weekend will be set up for children ages 9-17. The camp’s leadership will be accepting the first 100 people to register for the event and spots are going fast.

Brandon Smith, with the Corps of Engineers, said the primary purpose of this weekend is to reintroduce, or perhaps introduce for the first time, nature to children who might not see much of it.

“We’re trying to emphasize the greatness of the outdoors, and promote outdoor recreation, doing things safely and properly,” Smith said. “Safety is our highest priority here, which is why all of our instructors are certified, and will make certain that all safety regulations are followed to the letter, so that these kids can have a good time, and enjoy their natural world.”

Sponsors for the event include the Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division, Ducks Unlimited, the National Wild Turkey Foundation, and the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Each event is set up as a station in the park, so children can hear different professional hunters and fishermen speak, see demonstrations and participate in them and then rotate through the next station.
