December 3, 2020 – Since coming back from the Thanksgiving break we have had a slight increase of positive COVID-19 cases with our students. Although there is an increase, the number of current active cases per school is still five or fewer, which is less than 1% of our student population.
In most situations, our positive cases are stemming from events that have taken place outside of school. As a reminder, if someone in your household has COVID-19 or you are waiting on COVID-19 test results, your household needs to quarantine. In this situation, please do not send your child to school. And if you were within 6 feet of someone for 15 minutes or longer within 24 hours of that person testing positive or showing COVID-19 symptoms (then testing positive), you need to quarantine. If we follow these rules we can minimize the number of students we have to send home for fourteen days who may not have COVID-19, but have been identified as a close contact to a person who has tested positive.
Although our positive student cases are minimal at each campus, we have several students learning remotely due to being identified as a close contact. Identifying and removing students who were considered close contacts from the general student population is how we minimize a potential spread amongst our student body. At school, we do our best to social distance, but in some cases it is impossible to keep students 6 feet apart for less than 15 minutes. In many circumstances, our schools are the safest place for our students during a World Pandemic. The schools in Demopolis are clean, students are constantly monitored to make sure they are wearing masks, adults are wearing masks, students are eating in small groups, restrooms are professionally cleaned, frequently touched surfaces are disinfected regularly, and anyone who is showing COVID-19 like symptoms is immediately isolated.
How can you help?
Make sure your child is wearing a mask while at school and in public.
Make sure your child’s mask covers his/her nose and mouth.
Make sure your child washes his/her hands frequently.
Do not let your child share food or drinks with others.
Make sure your child covers when he or she coughs or sneezes.
Frequently wash winter coats, jackets, cardigans, etc…
Do not let your child attend social gatherings. If you do, ensure he or she and others wear masks and practice social distancing.
Let’s work together to keep our schools open and community safe.
