The Demopolis Public Library began a phased re-opening on Monday, May 4, as COVID-19 restrictions were lifted through- out the state.

Library patrons were able to reserve books, DVDs, and audio- books and pick them up via curb- side service. Computer services were also available during the re- opening for critical needs, such as filing for unemployment, stimulus information, employment opportunities, or for education. Computer users were allowed to bring one additional person with them for assistance as library staff was not available for one on one assistance due to social distancing.

Library Director Kathy Owings said that the library will not fully

reopen anytime soon.
“We’re going to have to wait

and see what the governor recommends for the state and the CDC guidelines in terms of social distancing. So it’s going to be a while before we can open without any restrictions.”

The library’ s annual Summer Reading Program may also be affected if coronavirus restrictions remain in place throughout the summer. One program is still on the calendar for June 8, but it will

be modified to accommodate social distancing.

“We’re just going to have to wait and see if we can have any children here,” said Owings. “But the performer has made accommodations if we need to do it another way. In terms of a regular Summer Reading Program, I don’t see it as being a normal program this year.”

Owings said the library might do some back to school events closer to when the school year begins in the fall.

Patrons may reserve items us- ing the library’ s online catalog at www.demopolislibrary.info. Computers are available through reservation only and days and times can be reserved by calling the library at 334-289-1595.

The phase will be evaluated again after May 14.
