Miley Cyrus, otherwise known as Hannah Montana, and her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, are joining forces to help the Department of Alabama Disabled American Veterans raise funds for military service men and women in need.
Lee Belcher, Commander of the Marengo County DAV Chapter 31, has joined in this effort by selling tickets on a chance to win a guitar autographed by the famous father and daughter.
Belcher said a sluggish economy has depleted state reserves set aside to aid financially struggling American Veterans.
The tickets, on sale for $2 each, will help replenish county and state coffers.
“The DAV is sometimes called on to help with power bills, water bills and other things like that,” Belcher said. “With the economy being down, more people have needed more help and that’s pulled down our available funding.”
One dollar from each ticket sold will remain in Marengo County.
The other dollar will be sent up to the state level.
However, Belcher said a block of tickets have also been given to the Demopolis High School ROTC program, who are equally limited on funding.
“The ROTC will keep 50 cents of every ticket they sale to help with their program,” Belcher said. “We’re still going to send $1 to the state but (Marengo DAV Chapter 31) will share 50-percent of our dollar to help them raise some money.”
The statewide drawing will be held Dec. 21.
