It was a fight to the finish in Sweet Water and the Bulldogs got the last punch when a 13-yard touchdown pass landed true with 20 seconds to go resulting in a 33-28 victory over Thomasville.

Thomasville had a nine-point lead going into the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs battled back late to snatch the win.

Sweet Water jumped out to an early lead when quarterback Braiden Broussard ran the ball into the endzone from four yards out. Michael Alan Cole’s point-after lifted the Bulldogs to a 7-0 lead with 4:23 to go in the first.

Thomasville battled right back, scoring about two minutes later on a 40-yard connection from Averian Malone to Javien Johnson. Jacob Horner’s PAT evened the score at seven.

The scoring remained tight in the second quarter with Sweet Water scoring on a 29-yard run by Jaland Lewis Horton. The point-after was no good.  Once again, Thomasville answered, scoring on a 13-yard run by Darian Grissom and taking a 14-13 lead after the extra point.

But, Sweet Water got the final score of the half as Broussard found Averian Malone for a 30-yard touchdown with only 1 second remaining on the clock. A two-point conversion attempt failed, but the Bulldogs went into the locker room with a 19-14 edge.

Thomasville held off the Bulldogs in the third quarter and began to pull away with consecutive scores to take a 28-19 lead.

With 3:05 remaining in the game, Sweet Water got back within striking distance when Broussard completed a 9-yard touchdown to Jaden Lewis. Cole’s point-after made it a tw0-point difference as Thomasville still led 28-26.

The Sweet Water defense stood strong and got the ball back for the offense, which would lead to a 13-yard touchdown pass from Broussard to Antonio Sullivan with only 20 seconds remaining and boosting the Bulldogs to the come-from-behind 33-28 victory.

The Sweet Water passing game finished with six completions out of 13 attempts. Of those six completions, three were touchdowns. The Bulldog running attack gained 227 yards.

Horton was the leading rusher for the Bulldogs with 86 yards with Broussard adding 66.

Broussard went 6-for-12 passing for 105 yards and three touchdowns. Leading receiver was Sasha Smith with two catches for 62 yards. Sullivan had two catches, both for touchdowns and Lewis’ single catch was also a touchdown.

Sweet Water will host region opponent St. Luke’s Episcopal on Friday, Sept. 6. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
