Senior Adults Living Triumphantly (SALT) will host a free Lunch & Learn with Vicky Noland Fitch, who will give a presentation on her book “Dementia with G.R.A.C.E.: A New, Positive Way of Dealing with Behaviors in People with Dementia,” at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall on Oct. 9, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Bambi Hamilton, director of SALT, said the presentation will give caregivers new tools to provide people with dementia a better life for a longer period of time, especially if the caregivers keep getting negative results.
“This is an opportunity to learn other ways of coping and to get a different result, a positive result, rather than a negative or frustrated result.”
She also said that, despite the serious topic, the presentation will remain humorous and entertaining.
“They will be entertained when they come. It is not simply a lecture like a medical lecture or a school lecture.”
Fitch’s expertise comes from a Bachelor of Science in Social Work, a career as a Certified Dementia Practitioner and coping with her own medical needs from seizures. She actively consults with, educates and trains caregivers, as well as operates a Facebook support group and hosts a weekly Facebook Live show, “The Dementia with Grace Show.”
Other sponsors for the Lunch & Learn include Sonrise Assisted Living, Comfort Care Hospice and Demopolis First United Method Church. The deadline for reservations, which can be made by calling Hamilton at 334-422-5054 or FUMC at 334-289-1933, is Oct. 5.
SALT is a respite program for individuals with dementia and their caregivers that takes place at FUMC every Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
