Roy Moore won a Republican runoff election against Luther Strange Tuesday for a seat in the U.S. Senate, with Marengo County voters helping the former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice rise to the victory.

The runoff is leading up to a special election to fill the seat vacated when Jeff Sessions accepted the position as U.S. Attorney General. Strange was appointed to fill the seat by former governor Robert Bentley.

Moore was the favorite of voters in Marengo County by a total count of 970 to 815.

Absentee ballots came in with Moore at 11 and Strange with 12.

Moore will face Democrat Doug Jones in a special election on Dec. 12.
