The Marengo County Commission announced last week that John Scott was officially appointed as the county coroner by then-governor Robert Bentley. Scott has been serving as the temporary replacement appointed by Marengo County Probate Judge Laurie Hall.
Scott was appointed by Hall on Jan. 17 after former coroner Stuart Eatmon Sr. resigned in December 2016 due to health concerns.
As an elected position, Scott needed the official appointment from the governor’s office to serve out the reminder of the term, which ends with the 2018 election.
Scott is a 2008 graduate of Demopolis High School, went on to earn a degree in business from the University of Alabama in 2012 and then a degree in funeral service from East Mississippi Community College in 2015.
The Demopolis native also aids in day-to-day operations at Larkin and Scott Mortuary, which has been in his family for five generations.
Other actions approved by the commission include the following:
• Reappointment of Curtis King to the South Marengo County Water and Fire Protection Authority Board.
• Sponsoring the Summer Feeding Program and a bid of $14,500 by Demopolis Delivery Service to provide the Summer Feeding Program.
• A $14,548.56 bid from Ozark Striping for work on five roads, county roads 54, 36, 21, 17 and Arcola Road.
• Hiring Mitchell Gilbert for the county Road Department.
Commission Attorney W.W. Dinning Jr. was tasked with drafting a petition for landowners along County Road 33 to approve vacating the dirt portion of that road known as Sally’s Hill. No action can be taken until all those who own land along the stretch of road sign the petition.
The next regular commission meeting is scheduled for May 2 at the Marengo County Courthouse.
