With a seat on the Demopolis City Schools Board of Education opening soon, three people were nominated to fill that upcoming vacancy by members of the city council during a meeting Thursday night.
The current term of school board member Lynda Russell expires at the end of May. She has served on the board for almost two full terms.
In preparing to fill the seat, the council opened the meeting to nominations with three names being presented. District 4 Councilman Bill Meador nominated Betty McCants, District 2 Councilmember Nathan Hardy named Floy Mayberry, and District 3 Councilman Harris Nelson nominated Elizabeth Smith.
All three councilmembers presenting nominations stated they have spoken to the nominees and that they are willing to serve.
According to Mayor Mike Grayson the council will vote among those nominees at the first council meeting in May, which is scheduled for May 5.
“We have two weeks to consider the nominees and we will come back in two weeks prepared to vote and make a decision,” Grayson said.
School board members serve five-year terms and may only serve two consecutive terms.
Other items discussed by the council included:
• Park and Recreation Director Walker Reynolds approached the council stating that the board is looking into adding small fees for parking in premium spaces at the Sportsplex. No final decision has been made and Mayor Grayson asked that a formal plan be submitted to the council at the next meeting. Reynolds said if the plan were implemented, the money would be used for upkeep of the parks.
• Resident Ruthie Williams approached the council stating that a ditch by her home has been in poor condition of years and that has become a danger to her property and has resulted in a mosquito problem there.
• The council approved an amendment to Civic Center rules to allow alcohol there on Sundays.
