Four area schools were on hand to compete in the Demopolis Invitation Track and Field Meet held on the Demopolis High School campus on March 9.
The DHS Track team came away victorious in the girls and boys division over the visiting Linden, Sweet Water and Thomasville teams.
The DHS girls finished with an overall point total of 226. Sweet Water finished second with 113.5 points followed by Linden with 81.5 points and Thomasville with 47.
Meanwhile, the boys finished in first place with 193 team points just ahead of Linden’s 160 points. Sweet Water finished third with 143 points and Thomasville totalled 48 points.
As a team, the DHS Track girls came away with victories in the girls’ 4 by 100 meter relay with a time of 50.34 seconds, 4 by 400 meter relay with a time of 4.34 minutes and the 4 by 800 meter relay with a time of 11.55 minutes all in the 17-18 division.
Darnesha Harris finished at the top runner in the Girls 100 meter hurdles finishing in 16.9 seconds. Right behind her was DHS teammate Ashleigh Ivory with a time of 17.74 seconds.
In the girls’ 100 meter dash, DHS had the first and second place participants as Nykeria Grayer posted the top time of 13.44 seconds with Ivory right on her heels with a time of 13.54 seconds.
DHS also had the top two finishers in the girls’ 1,600 meter run as Amindy Mullins finished the race in 6 minutes and 38.1 seconds and Caitlin Thrash came in behind her at 6 minutes and 38.5 seconds.
Continuing the trend of going back to back, Shy’shawna Smith and Grayer finished first and second place in the 200 meter dash with times of 26.84 seconds and 27.64 seconds respectively.
The 400 meter dash belonged to Keyjana Waller who finished with a time of 1 minute and 7.74 seconds.
Audrey Boykin finished first in the 800 meter run with a time of 2 minutes and 58.6 seconds.
In field events, Demopolis’s Samantha Williams finished second in the discus competition with a 66.1 meter throw. Carol Ann Norris of Sweet Water finished first at 75.04 meters.
Mary-Micheal Bradley and Emily Garrett of DHS and Anna Dixon of Sweet Water all finished with a results of 4.01 meters in the high jump.
Darnesha Harris and Yasmein Rainey finished first and second in the long jump with Harris totalling a distance of 15.10.5 meters while Rainey finished at 15.1 meters.
The Demopolis boys’ swept the team events coming away with victories in the boys 4 by 100 meter relay with a time of 46.04 seconds, 4 by 400 meter relay with a time of 3.57 minutes and the 4 by 800 meter relay with a time of 9.21 minutes all in the 17-18 division.
In the boys’ 100 meter dash, Denzel McAlpine came away with the win finishing with a time of 11.84 seconds. Samuel Plummer finished third at 12.34 seconds.
McAlpine also won the 200 meter dash with a time 23.14 seconds.
In the boys 1,600 meter run, “Fast” Eddie Jones finished first at 5.11 minutes and teammate Jeremiah Jones finished second 5.47 minutes.
Banks Compton won the 3,200 meter run with a time of 12 minutes and 57.5 seconds.
Demopolis had two top three finishers in the 3,200 meter dash as Mandrell Rembert finished first in 55.04 seconds and Cameron Crawford.
Tyler Ward finished second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2 minutes and 22 seconds, just two seconds behind the winner Cameron Echols of Sweet Water.
In boys field competition, Khyrim Bryant and William Douglas brought home first and second place finishes with the shot put as Bryant threw 42 meters while Douglas threw for 36.06 meters.
Trey Haskins won the boys long jump with 20.06 meter effort. Haskins finished fourth in the boys high jump at 5.10 meters.
Boys’ javelin competition finished with Houston Norris of Sweet Water as the winner with a throw of 113.03 meters. Samuel Plummer finished second with a 102.03 meter effort.
DHS Track will return to competition Thursday, March 17, with a meet at Greensboro High School.
Demopolis will host another track and field meet April 14 where 11 schools are expected to travel to the DHS campus.
