The local Rotary Foundation selected three community leaders, Dr. Wesley Hill, Reynolds and Joe Stegall. The Demopolis club has had 63 Fellows since the program started in 1947, including two named at other clubs.

Hill was introduced by Van Kelly, Reynolds by Claude Neilson and Stegall by Billy Traeger.

Hill said he was honored to be selected. He felt the honor went to the Demopolis City Schools System as much to him. "I’m fortunate to be part of a very good school system which many people have (contributed to)," Hill said.

He noted the help of his family and "the good school people we’ve had."

Reynolds remembered the first time she had heard about Rotary. The club’s ideals had an impact on her as early as the first grade, she said Friday. "In the classroom was a copy of the four-way test: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendship? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Reynolds said she was honored to be listed with the other Harris honorees who she admired and respected.

The Demopolis Rotary Club allows local civic leaders to come together and communicate and collaborate on charitable projects to make Demopolis a better place, Hill said.

Rotary clubs have the privilege of naming a Fellow for every $1,000 contribution made to the Rotary International Foundation. The money is used by Rotary International for three years. At the end of that time, 60 percent is returned to the district, of which the club is a part, for use in philanthropic and district projects.

The Rotary International Foundation currently is focused on the eradication of polio, a project it started 15 years ago. With the help of Rotarians around the world, as well as the support of other agencies and governments, only a few pockets of polio remain. The Foundation hopes to wipe out polio by 2005, Rotary’s 100th anniversary.
