The Demopolis City Council approved the rezoning of the old Marvin’s Building Materials building on S. Cedar Avenue during its Dec. 8 meeting.
The council voted to grant a B-3-C designation, which will allow Shane Spiller to open a furniture store in the building.
The designation came at the recommendation of the Planning Commission.
“When you attach that ‘C’ on it, it puts a limitation that only that particular business can operate there,” Grayson said.
Spiller had been seeking a B-3 designation, according to Grayson.
Spiller hopes to subdivide the 25,000-square-foot building, creating space for multiple businesses.
“The plan now is for Spiller Furniture to occupy half the building, which will leave another 10,000 square feet,” Spiller said. “I’m actively looking for someone to fill that space, but at this time don’t have anything lined up.”
The council voted unanimously approve the B-3-C designation, which means if Spiller does subdivide the building, the council would have to give its OK before another business could open at the location.
“There’s probably something under the umbrella of B-3 that you wouldn’t want right there in the middle of a residential area,” council member Harris Nelson said.
The council is scheduled to meet Thursday at 5:15 p.m. at Rooster Hall.
