The Demopolis City Council made several board appointments during Monday night’s meeting.
For the hospital board, the council nominated Mary Jo Martin, Alex Braswell, Thomas Moore and Joyce Weiss. The councilmembers will work over the next two weeks to decide who they will appoint.
For the Board of Adjustments, Mark Dollar and Anne Hunter were reappointed to their positions. Mary Jo Martin’s term on the board expired, and the council appointed Sylvia Malone to take her place.
On the cemetery board, Kitty Eddins and Angenelle Jones were reappointed to their positions.
Deborah Mitchell was reappointed to the library board, while a parks and recreation board appointment was tabled to the next meeting.
In other business, the council voted to surplus the Rosenbush Warehouse building that fronts onto Main Avenue in Demopolis. Mayor Mike Grayson said the warehouse is completely separate from the Rosenbush Museum. Councilman Harris Nelson said he wants the building committee to meet with members of the state historical commission to make sure the bid process is done in a way that maintains the historical integrity of the building.
The council also voted to allow the rezoning of the property at 1106 Bailey Drive. Grayson said the property is behind the Canebrake Commons shopping center, and will be used for personal storage as well as storage buildings. He added that the change was already approved by the planning commission.
The council also decided to move the deadline for request to appear before the council. Previously, the deadline was at noon the day before a council meeting. The council approved by a 4-2 vote to move the deadline to three days prior to a meeting. Normally, meetings are held on Thursdays, so the deadline would be Monday before the meeting at noon.
In other business, the council tabled several discussions during the meeting including the2014-15 budget, the city’s garbage contract and changes to ordinances on catering and chuck wagons/portable vendors.
The council will hold a work session on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 5:15 p.m. to discuss the budget in further detail.
