The West Alabama Prep Titans took care of business on their home field last Friday night.

Six different Titans scored touchdowns in the game, as the host beat the visiting Calvary Christian Watchmen 41-14.

Heading into the game, the Titans had a good idea that the game would not be heavily contested.

Calvary’s roster showed only three Juniors and five Sophomores.

In 2000, the Watchmen finished runners-up in AISA class 1A.

A source close to the program told The Demopolis Times that the following season, there wasn’t enough interest in football to even field a team.

For the first time since, CCA is attempting to reinvent football on its campus just south of Montgomery.

During his post-game press conference, WAP Coach Webb Tutt had nothing but praise for the visiting team.

On this night, however, the Titans were too much for the Watchmen to handle.

Calvary received the opening kickoff, but could not gain any yards before being forced to punt.

Beginning on their own 20 yard line, WAP immediately took control of the football game. Tailback Devon Norman starting things off with two runs of 16 and 13 yards.

Fullback Joe Magro countered with a run of his own, a 45-yarder.

Norman finished off the four-play drive with a six-yard plunge into the endzone.

Following a CCA fumble on their 33 yard line, the Titans needed only three plays to score.

A 19-yard run by Tony Reed was followed by consecutive 7-yard runs by Magro.

Magro’s PAT was good, and the Titans led 13-0 with 5:45 left in the first quarter.

Later in the same quarter, Reed’s runs of 14, 17 and 16 yards set up his touchdown-yielding 7-yard run with 18 seconds remaining.

Magro’s kick was again good, and the Titans led 20-0.

The Titan carousel continued on their next drive.

This time, it was Rusty Pope’s turn with the football, and he made the most of it. Pope carried for runs of 33 and 16 yards, the later finding paydirt.

As Coach Tutt pointed out, the Watchmen would not quit.

Beginning on their own 35, they mounted a five-play scoring drive.

Brian Jenkins capped the drive with a 19-yard run. With 4:27 remaining in the second quarter, CCA trailed the Titans 27-6.

To say the Titan offense is "run-oriented" would be an understatement.

Statistically speaking, WAP stays on the ground for 92 percent of its plays this season.

Stated another way, the Titans pass once out of every 11.5 plays.

With only a 21-point lead and 1:39 remaining in the first half, Coach Tutt decided that it was time to call the pass play. Quarterback Kevin May dropped into a well-protected pocket, looked downfield and found Shayne Hilchey streaking along the right sideline.

The play was good for 53 yards and a Titan touchdown.

Magro’s PAT was good, and the Titans led at halftime 34-6.

With the game under control, Coach Tutt decided to allow the second and third-string players, mostly junior high, to get valuable playing-time experience during the second half.

As a result, some players got their first varsity carries during the game, including Matthew Bouler, Drew Waldrop and Ryan Bohannon.

Bouler would later add a touchdown, a 3-yard run with 11:54 left in the game, giving the Titans a 41-6 lead.

Calvary added a touchdown, a 35-yard run by Jeremy Raney, and a two-point conversion to bring the final score to 41-14.

Walton Luckie led the Titan defense with nine stops on the night.

Next Friday, West Alabama Prep (4-1, 3-0) travels to Jackson to play the #4 team in the AISA, as ranked by the Alabama Sportswriters Association.

Jackson Academy (4-0) had an open week in preparation for the Titans.

Monday night, the Titans will host a junior-high game versus Marion Academy.

The JV game will be preceded by tiny-mites and Pee-Wee football games, also against Marion.

The action kicks off at 5:30.
