The Demopolis City Board of Education welcomed Carolyn Moore to the board Monday night after she was named to the board by the Demopolis City Council two weeks ago.
Moore replaces Laura Foster, who served the maximum of two terms on the board.
“After 10 years and a month of your service on this board, I and the rest of the board can’t thank you enough,” Superintendent Dr. Al Griffin said.
Foster said she enjoyed every moment of her time on the board.
Also during the meeting, the board approved a resolution for Demopolis Middle School teacher Lisa McHugh, who was named WAKA-Montgomery’s Golden Apple Teacher of the Year.
The board also approved the following personnel recommendations from Griffin:
•Post central office secretary position through July 1
•Post U.S. Jones special education aide position through July 1
•Employ Etta Marie Pope as a teacher at USJ
•Employ Jennifer Felus as a special education teacher at USJ
•Employ Terri Speegle as a reading coach at Westside Elementary
•Open WES teacher position through July 1
•Employ Martell Jones as Demopolis High School special education aide
During Monday’s meeting, the board also revised policy 4.43, which will give teachers and coaches more freedom when it comes to taking one or two students on a field trip. Griffin said that with parent permission, teachers or coaches could take students on a field trip in their personal vehicle. The revision also requires all drivers of the system’s driver’s education vehicle to be on the school system’s insurance.
In other business, the board took the following action:
•Approve payroll and expenditures for the month of May
•Approve overnight travel for Kelly Gandy, Connie Davis, Courtney Taylor and Nadine Rogers to attend the National Academy Foundation Conference in Washington, D.C., on July 8-12
•Give authorization to Gina Johnston to apply for federal money
•Approve use of DMS football stadium by the Demopolis Police Department for National Night Out on Aug. 5
•Awarded bid for paper for the 2014-15 school year to Newell Paper Company
