U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell won election to a third term Tuesday by defeating Tamara Harris Johnson for Alabama’s 7th Congressional District seat.

Sewell earned 84 percent of the vote in her district to retain her seat. In Marengo County, Sewell received 4,904 votes, or 76.81 percent of the vote.

“Today the people of Alabama’s 7th District honored me with their votes, and I am excited to have the privilege of continuing to be their representative in Washington,” Sewell said in a press release. “Four years ago we began this journey to provide resources and opportunities in the 7th District, and I am proud that the people of the district have endorsed the job we’ve done and believe we can tackle the work that lies ahead.”

She added that she will continue the work that she has started.

“I will continue to fight for better economic opportunities and to stand up to Republicans who try to roll back our progress,” she said. “I have President Barack Obama’s back in Congress, and I want my constituents to know that we are both working hard for them. Thanks to the people of the 7th District for having my back at the polls today.”

For Marengo County Board of Education, District 4, incumbent Arthur Hopson and Chester Moore will meet in a runoff. Moore earned 629 votes, or 41.33 percent, while Hopson had 464 votes or 30.49 percent. Charles Chapman finished third with 429 votes, or 29.19 percent.
