The Demopolis City Schools Board of Education awarded a bid for replacing the flooring at the Demopolis High School gymnasium.

The bid was awarded to Covington Flooring in Birmingham for $95,609. Superintendent Dr. Al Griffin said the project will begin after Memorial Day and should take around eight weeks to complete. He also said the floor would be state-of-the-art once completed.

The board also approved a professional services contract with Hathcock Consulting, LLC to do a site evaluation on possibly creating a special needs cost center. The cost of the consulting will be $2,000.

In Monday’s meeting, the board also approved an amendment to a policy dealing with data use and information management in the school system.

DCS Technology Director Jeremiah Dial said this policy amendment is the first step in the process of keeping the system in compliance with the state on evolving technology.

Kim Browder, a history teacher at DHS, addressed the board about teachers certified by the National Board of Certified Teachers and their pay.

She said teachers were under the assumption they would be paid $5,000 for being board certified, but on their most recent checks, they received less than half of that. Board chairman Jim Stanford asked for the item to be tabled until the next meeting to give the board time to research what needs to be done.

The board also approved the following overnight travel requests:

•Overnight and out-of-state travel for DHS DECA students to Atlanta on May 2-7 for the International Career Development Conference

•Overnight and out-of-state travel for the DMS Junior Beta Club members to Gatlinburg, Tenn., on May 15-16 for their end of year trip as well as to Richmond, Va., on June 20-25 for the National Junior Beta Convention

•Overnight travel for the DHS tennis teams to Mobile on April 23-25 for the Class 5A state tournament

•Overnight travel for the DHS softball team to Troy for the central regional tournament on May 9-10 and the state tournament in Montgomery, if necessary, on May 18-19

•Overnight travel for DHS track to sectionals in Mobile on April 24-25 and to the state finals on May 1-2

•Overnight travel for DHS soccer to the state tournament in Huntsville on May 8-9, if necessary

•Overnight travel for DHS golf to sectionals in Sylacauga (boys) and Mobile (girls) on April 26-27, sub-state in Montgomery on May 3-4 and state on May 10-12

The board also approved the following personnel recommendations from Griffin:

•Family and Medical Leave request for William Barley

• Family and Medical Leave request for Ronnie Edwards

•Volunteer requests for Gary Johnston and Gregory Turner

•Resignation of Pam Wyatt

•Allow Dana Freeman to serve on the Alabama Reading Initiative staff for the 2014-15 year on a 10-month contract with DCS

•Approve Rosie Tuck as DMS special education aide

•Open special education aide position at DHS for seven days through Monday, April 28

The board also took the following action during the meeting:

•Approve financial statements for March 2014

•Approve the use of the DHS auditorium by the Demopolis Music Study Club on Oct. 2

•Approve textbook adoption

•Approve proclamation for National Teacher Day

The next regular board meeting will be held Monday, May 19 at 5:15 p.m.
