The Canebrake Players will present “Dixie Swim Club” in April. It’s a story about friendship and camaraderie, dating back to the club members’ time together on their college swim team.
Opening night is Friday, April 11 at the Old School on Main in Demopolis. Performances will continue Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
The production has a cast of just five, all women. It will also mark Johnny Johnston’s directing debut.
Every day this week The Times will be featuring one of the five cast members: Donna Bishop, Kelley Freeman Mullins, Laurie Willingham, Dana Freeman and Candace Jones Colgrove.
Donna Bishop plays Sheree, the team’s leader and a character with obsessive quirks and well-hidden imperfections.
Donna is a paralegal for attorney Billy Coplin and wife of Allen Bishop, senior vice president at Robertson Banking Company. She says the part of her job she enjoys most is helping people.
She began her involvement in community theater as a choral singer in Canebrake’s production of “Ring of Fire,” had so much fun and is now hooked on performing. For this reason, she auditioned for “Dixie Swim Club.”
Donna’s favorite show is “Rumors,” and she was also the robot in “Return to the Forbidden Planet.”
When asked if this play impacts her personally, she said “we all need friendship an support” and we need to have people in our lives to “keep us grounded or keep us from being ground down.”
When asked to share something about herself that most people do not know Donna said, “I have been to every state in the U.S. at least once.”
