The DHS baseball team could not overcome a rough night at the plate in a 5-2 loss to Hale County on Monday.

The Tigers had five hits in the game, and three of those came in the seventh inning.

Head coach James Moody said his team has a lot to work on before they open area play Friday at Selma.

“We’ve got to work on everything to do with the game of baseball,” he said. “The game is not as hard as we’re trying to make it. We have to be able to do the routine things.”

The Tigers fell behind 4-0 in the game before crossing the plate in the sixth inning. Demopolis only had two hits through the first six innings, both coming early. Tyler Oates had a double in the first inning and Jacob Rodrigues had a single in the second inning.

The Wildcats score their first run in the second inning on a RBI single by Blake Williams that scored Tyler Gillam. Their second run came in the third inning on a delayed double steal that allowed Grayson Stegall to score from third base.

Hale County added two more runs in the sixth to go up 4-0.

The Tigers scored one run in the sixth after Stephen Stewart reached on an error by the third baseman. Wesley Dunn came in to run for Stewart and later scored on an error by the pitcher. The second run for the Tigers came in the bottom of the seventh after John Anthony Morrison led the inning off with a triple and was brought in on a single by Rodrigues.

Michael Brooker started the game for Demopolis and pitched two innings, giving up two runs, two hits and a walk. He had two strikeouts in the game. Oates came in to relieve Brooker and pitched three innings, giving up two runs, both unearned, two hits and a walk. He had five strikeouts in his three innings. Stewart came in for the last two innings where he gave up two runs, a walk and two hits. He had two strikeouts.

Demopolis will travel to Selma on Friday and will host Selma in a double header Saturday.
