Demopolis High School’s baseball team got back in the win column Friday night with two wins in a double header at Cordova, ending a five-game losing streak.
The Tigers won the first game 11-7 in eight innings and they won the second game 12-1 in five innings.
Head coach James Moody said the wins are a big confidence-booster for the team.
“I think it gives us confidence more than anything,” Moody said. “We let them come back in the first game after we had a big lead, then we scored four in the eighth. That got us going for the second game. It’s always good to get back on track, but it really builds more confidence than anything.”
In the first game of the night, the Tigers led 7-2 late before giving up five runs to allow Cordova to tie the game at 7. Wil Stephens had a three-RBI triple in the eighth that helped Demopolis to the 11-7 win.
Tripp Perry started the game, but only pitched one inning. He gave up two hits, a walk and two runs, both earned. Moody said he was pulled because he tweaked his back, so it was a precautionary measure.
Adam Sellers came into the game to pitch six innings. He gave up five hits, two walks and five runs, only one of which was earned. He also had five strikeouts. He earned the win in the game.
Tyler Oates came into the game in the eighth and only allowed one hit.
Offensively, Matt Eicher was 0-for-4 at the plate, but he reached on three errors. He scored three runs and had a RBI. Seth Aiken was 1-for-3 with two sacrifice bunts and a run scored. Oates went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Michael Brooker had two doubles with two RBIs and two runs scored. Wil Stephens was 1-for-2 with a three-RBI triple. He also scored twice in the game. Jacob Rodrigues and Stephen Stewart both had a RBI in the game, and Rodrigues crossed the plate once. Ryan Schroeder was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
In the second game, the Tigers took control early and never let up, ending the game in five innings with a 12-1 victory.
Luke Yelverton pitched all five innings, giving up five hits and a run. He also had three strikeouts in the win.
At the plate, all nine starters for Demopolis had either a run scored or a RBI.
Eicher was 2-for-2 with a triple, a RBI and two runs scored. Aiken scored three runs, Oates had three RBIs, Brooker had a RBI and a run scored, John Anthony Morrison had a RBI, Stephens had a RBI, Stewart scored two runs, Rodrigues scored once and Schroeder crossed the plate three times.
The two wins put Demopolis at 6-8 on the season. They will host Hale County on Monday at 5 p.m., and they will be on the road Friday at Selma.
