Seneca Walton scored 20 points in 24 minutes to lead 11th ranked Delta State to a 63-38 women’s Gulf South Conference basketball victory over West Alabama Monday at Sillers Coliseum.

West Alabama lost its 11th straight game on the road to fall to 4-14 overall and 1-11 in GSC play. Delta State improved its league-leading conference record to 11-1 and 16-2 overall.

Delta State jumped out to an 20-2 lead in the first nine minutes of the game while West Alabama endured a scoring drought for 8:11 of the first 20 minutes. DSU led 29-9 with five minutes left in the first half, but the Tigers outscored the Lady Statesmen 12-8 the rest of he way to trail 37-21 at halftime.

“We came out and saw all those championship banners hanging in this building and got intimidated right off the bat,” UWA head coach Craig Roden said. “After they had us by 18, it was about even for the next 30 minutes, but we just don’t have the firepower to overcome that deficit.”

Ten Delta State players scored, but Walton was the only Lady Statesmen in double figures. She also collected seven rebounds for DSU, whose largest lead was 60-32 with 5:11 left in the game. Delta State shot 45 percent 21-of-46) from the floor while limiting West Alabama to just 27 percent (13-of-48).

Quentinette Odom notched West Alabama’s fifth double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. The senior from Forest, Miss., was the only Tiger to score in double figures.

“We have a choice to make now,” Roden said. “We can play out the string or take advantage of having six of our last eight games at home.”

West Alabama returns home Thursday to host Valdosta State (9-8, 4-7). Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at Pruitt Hall. Delta State travels to West Georgia on Thursday.
