The four nominees for Saint Nicholas — the highest honor of the annual Christmas on the River festival — have been announced by Saint Nicholas committee chair Carla Keen.
This year’s nominees are Kenny Freeman, a West Alabama Real Estate employee who is the president of the DHS Quarterback Club; Carolyn Moore, a counselor at U.S. Jones Elementary School; Mike Randall, a Georgia Pacific employee who works as a volunteer assistant with the Demopolis High School baseball team; and Johnnie Scott, a third-grade teacher at U.S. Jones Elementary.
Saint Nicholas will be crowned at the Demopolis Civic Center on Monday, Nov. 30, at 5:30 p.m. Preceding the ceremony, a children’s walk with lanterns made by the children will take place from the city landing to the Civic Center.
“Weather permitting, the kids with their lanterns are going to meet down at the city landing,” Keen said. “They will then parade up to the Civic Center.”
Keen said she hoped to have the 2008 Saint Nicholas, Ann Parsons, lead the children’s lantern light parade.
The tradition of Saint Nicholas was added to the COTR festivities in 1989. Since then, 23 men and women have been accorded the honor. The first recipients were beloved Demopolis High School teacher Pat Hinson and Jim Carlson, who was an active community volunteer.
