Local teams battle for playoff position

Region play wraps up around the county this week, and a couple of teams still have a lot to play for.
Demopolis (6-2, 4-2) will face the No. 1 team in Class 5A, Region 3, Jackson (8-0, 4-0). The game will be played Thursday night in Demopolis, and the Tigers can make a statement and gain some momentum heading into the playoffs with a win. The short week for the Tigers doesn’t change their preparation, especially for a big region game.
“We just move everything up a day,” head coach Tom Causey said. “We start our week Sunday instead of Monday. I like Thursday night games. They’re different, and the players enjoy them, and they generally bring out a good crowd.”
Causey said for his team to be able to slow down Jackson a secure a win, they need to do what they know how to do.
“We need to do what we do,” he said. “We have to take care of the football and make sure we don’t give up the big play.”
On Friday night in Sweet Water, the Bulldogs (6-2, 6-0) will play for the Class 2A, Region 1 championship as they host Mobile Christian (7-1, 5-1). The Bulldogs are on top of the region heading into Friday night’s game, and a win would clinch it for them for the second year in a row.
Linden (6-2, 6-0) has already clinched the Class 1A, Region 1 championship, but they can finish an undefeated region season with a win over Fruitdale (3-5, 3-3) on the road.
A.L. Johnson (6-2, 4-2) and Marengo (5-3, 4-2) are both in the hunt for playoff spots, and are currently tied for third in the region. That will change Friday night when the two teams square off in Thomaston.
John Essex is still searching for their first win, and will travel to McIntosh (1-7, 1-5) to try to find it.
Marengo Academy (8-0, 5-0) will host Sumter Academy (2-6, 2-3) to try to keep their undefeated season alive.
