Demopolis Municipal Airport will soon apply for a grant for continued maintenance and improvements to the airport.

In Thursday’s Demopolis City Council meeting the council approved a request from airport manager Jason Pendergrass to apply for the $1 million grant. The city will have to match the grant with 5 percent of the money, coming out to around $50,000, depending on the final amount of the grant and improvement costs.

Councilman Charles Jones Jr. said he would have preferred to know about the grant a little bit sooner from a finance committee standpoint, but he still voted yes for approval of the grant.

The council also gave approved a public assembly request for the Marengo County Historical Society and the Canebrake Players for Haints and Haunts, to be performed on Friday, Oct. 25 and Saturday, Oct. 26 at Bluff Hall.

Two dilapidated housing projects will also be completed by the end of the upcoming weekend. Crews will begin the demolition and removal of homes at 1814 A Street and 1801 2nd Avenue. Public Works Superintendent Mike Baker said the projects would be completed by the end of the weekend.

In other business, the council approved rezoning for the property at 1105 Highway 80 West, which is the field next to Walmart that has been for sale for about a year. The property was rezoned from R2 zoning to BLI zoning, which is business light industrial zoning.
