Senior Awareness Day held at Theo Ratliff Center

A crowd of around 50 seniors gathered at the Theo Ratliff Center for Senior Awareness Day on Thursday.
Professionals from different medical fields spoke to senior citizens Thursday morning at the Theo Ratliff Center as part of Senior Awareness Day.
The program was held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and representatives from Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital, Comfort Care Hospice and Keen Chiropractic, as well as from Demopolis Fire and Rescue and the Marengo County Sheriff’s Office spoke to a group of around 50 seniors during the event.
Tyana Dixon, center manager of the West Alabama Senior Center, said the event is good for helping keep seniors informed of the services available to them.
Marengo County Sheriff Richard Bates spoke at Senior Awareness Day held at the Theo Ratliff Center Thursday morning.
“We’re doing this to make sure our seniors know what they have available to them,” Dixon said. “We want to make sure they take advantage of these opportunities.”
Shelley Wood from Comfort Care Hospice explained what her company offers for senior citizens, and that the stigma associated with hospice is often incorrect.
Marengo County Sheriff Richard Bates also spoke during the event. He explained different safety precautions people can take, and some services the Sheriff’s Department and other law enforcement offers for citizens.
“Our seniors are valuable to us,” he said. “We want to make sure you know what we offer to help keep you safe.”
Also during the event, seniors were able to get their blood pressure and cholesterol checked in the BWWMH mobile unit.
