Avery David Spencer Sr.

Avery David Spencer Sr., 76, of Marion died Monday, Sept. 16 at Shelby Baptist in Alabaster.

He was born Aug. 9, 1937, in Greensboro to the late Victor Kelly and Zena Hamm Spencer Jr.

He served his country proudly in the Alabama National Guard. He and his family were members of the Siloam Baptist Church in Marion. He was the owner and operator of Spencer’s Gulf Station in Marion, and, along with his father, owned and operated Spencer Material Service Trucking Company. He enjoyed all music, especially his love for playing the steel guitar. He also loved his Auburn Tigers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor Kelly and Zena Hamm Spencer Jr.; sister, Eleanor Spencer; and niece, Leanne Spencer Wallace.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Annie Ruth Fondren Spencer of Marion; daughters, Sommer Spence (John) Webb of Marion and Britton (Jason) Spencer of Marion; son, Chip (Laura) Spencer of Marion Junction; sisters, Grace Jackson of Marion and Cheryl (Harris) Keller of Mexico; grandchildren, Campbell Webb, Mary Clanton Webb, Baylon Tucker, Finley Tucker, Veigh Kaye Spencer and Mac Spencer; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 19 at 11 a.m. at Kirk Funeral Homes Marion Chapel. The family received friends at the chapel from 10-10:50 a.m. before the service. The Revs. Shannon Allen and Thomas Fondren officiated, and Kirk Funeral Homes Marion Chapel directed. Burial followed in Pine Crest Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Jason Tucker, Baylon Tucker, Lee Williams, Todd Williams, Larry Williams, David Jackson, Colby Smith and Randy Smith.

Honorary pallbearers were Richard Hopkins, A.J. Hamm, Gene Allen Fisher, Bubba Hall, Bobby Williams, Earl Horan, Ken Worrell and Eddie Horton.
