The Marengo County Commission held their monthly meeting Tuesday at the county courthouse.

During the meeting, the commission approved the dates of Aug. 2-4 as the annual sales tax holiday for Marengo County.

Kevin McKinney, the Marengo County EMA Director and 911 Director addressed the commission about three safe house applications that are awaiting reimbursement.

These safe houses are shelters for severe weather, and the commission is reimbursing the people who have them built. There were 16 applicants when the process began, and now only three have not yet been built.

John Bell, manager of the Marengo County Solid Waste Office, said he and his crews are currently working on several road cleanup projects throughout the county, and that there was nothing major to report on.

Marengo County Extension Coordinator Kathryn Friday addressed the commission in place of Economic Development Authority Director Brenda Tuck.

Friday said the EDA is working on several projects, including three steel industry projects that could affect the Demopolis port. Project Global, Project Shore and Project Fischer are all projects dealing with the steel industry and the port.

She also said the Alabama Farmer’s Federation and Auburn University will be coming into Demopolis to work with Denali Organics.

There is also another project, labeled RT2, which is a company using part of the old New Era building in Demopolis for warehousing.
