The Canebrake Players are now accepting essays for the Clark Pickel Canebrake Players Memorial Scholarship that is worth $1,000.

All essays are to be submitted by mail only to P.O. Box 1164, Demopolis, AL 36732 and postmarked by Monday, April 22.

Only seniors who have been a part of a Canebrake production may apply for the scholarship. The students could have been involved through acting or by helping at the Canebrake.

The subject for the essay is, “What the Canebrake Players mean to me.” The maximum word count for the submissions is 500 words. Also, on a separate sheet of paper, applicants should include productions and areas that they have worked on with the Canebrake Players.

The scholarship was presented to the Canebrake Players board of directors in 1992 by Ann Parsons, who wanted to support the children that kept the Canebrake going over the years.

The President of the Canebrake Players board of directors Laurie Willingham said the scholarship started out as a $200 scholarship, then improved to a $500 scholarship.

“Three years ago, Buddy and Lisa Pickel wanted to offer a larger scholarship in honor of their son, Clark,” Willingham said, “and that’s when it increased to $1,000.”

Willingham added that the scholarship is a way for the Canebrake Players to show gratitude to the students that have kept the Canebrake going through the years.
