The bridge on county road 10 south of Cuba in the Kinterbish Community has been closed due to being deemed unsafe. The Sumter County Commission voted during its meeting on Monday to close the bridge until they could ask the state to come in and have a look at the problems.

“After the talks about the bridge, we decided in the best interest of the residents to close the bridge,” Beard said.

Commissioner Ronnie Beard said that the bridge has become unsafe because the bridge’s foundation has started to show signs of damage. He also said that the commission decided to close the bridge due to concerns from the residents of Kinterbish.

Beard said the commission has asked for the State of Alabama’s help with the project. He also said that the bridge will be closed for around a month and there is a detour route already setup.

“The work on the bridge will cause some delays and detours, but all the detours will be worth it in the long run,” Beard said.

After the vote on the bridge, the commission was approached by the American Cancer Society and was told about the free clinic that is currently under way in Livingston. Also consultants from the Gemini Corporation asked the commission to purchase their software to upgrade the production of car tags.

They also passed a resolution honoring the Sumter County Wildcats on winning the 3A state championship. Kaye Kiker with the Citizens Task Force also approached the commission and asked if they had written the letter to Chem. Waste that she asked for a couple of months ago. They tabled the request until they had a chance to talk with a lawyer.

Sumter County Sheriff Johnny Hatter talked to the commission about added medical kits to the new jail instead of having to travel to York. The commission changed the doctor that inmates see to one in Livingston, so it helps cut down on the travel.
