The Pilot Club of Demopolis joined hundreds of organizations worldwide to increase public awareness of the advances and benefits of brain research. As part of Brain Awareness Week, March 15-21, 2004, the Pilot Club of Demopolis, through a proclamation by Mayor Austin Caldwell and the Demopolis City Council, promoted brain safety by asking drivers to wear their seat belts, and encouraging children and adults to wear proper head gear while riding bikes, blades, boards, or scoters.
Sponsored by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives, Brain Awareness Week is an international effort uniting hospitals, schools, government agencies, and community groups to expand interest in the brain and to provide information about advances in brain research and neurological diseases affecting more than 150 million men, women and children.
Pilot’s focus on helping people affected by brain-related disorders was adopted in 1992. Since, then, approximately 25,000 adult and youth members of Pilot International have been working together to increase awareness and raise funds for programs associated with this focus.
In conjunction with this, Pilot members are selling opportunities to win a SPRING FLING getaway to assist with the operations of Camp ASCCA, a camp for children and adults with disabilities. In April, members will be teaching second graders how to protect their brains through the BrainMinders program, which uses animal characters called BrainMinder buddies to help children to remember the importance of caring for their brains.
