Gaineswood invites the public to come experience the history and culture of the Black Belt during Heritage Days.

Now in it’s 13th year, Heritage Days began as an educational program for fourth graders.

“In the past, Heritage Days has only been offered to pre-registered school groups,” said site director Eleanor Cunningham. “This year, we expanded the event to include a Saturday that is open to the public, no reservations required.

On Saturday, April 6, visitors can see blacksmiths and potters plying their trade, hear from a French militiaman, learn about the Choctaw way of life, be entertained by “Riverboat John” Ferguson and explore the architecture of Gaineswood.

Tours of the historic home are $5 for adults and $3 for students, and there is no admission for visiting the presenters on the grounds.

Heritage Days is sponsored by the Friends of Gaineswood through financial support from the Black Belt Community Foundation, the Wal-Mart Foundation, and the Alabama Black Belt Heritage Area.

Gaineswood is a historic site of the Alabama Historical Commission. Located at 805 South Cedar Avenue, the house museum is a National Historic Landmark noted for its architecture and furnishings.
