McAlpine chosen as member of AARP Volunteer Leadership Institute

Dr. Johnny W. McAlpine has been chosen as a member of the very first AARP Volunteer Leadership Institute in Washington, D.C.
He is one of only 23 AARP volunteer leaders to be selected for their leadership experience, expertise and high potential, chosen from the more than 90 nominees submitted nationally.
The Volunteer Leadership Institute, or VLI, is a 13-month intensive learning experience with Dr. McAlpine serving a following-up year as a mentor for the next incoming class.
Dr. Johnny McAlpine was chosen as a member of the very first AARP Volunteer Leadership Institute in Washington, D.C.
The class of 2013 represents 23 individuals in all corners of the country, from Alabama to New Hampshire; California to Puerto Rico.
The mission of the initial AARP Volunteer Leadership Institute is to develop and mobilize the expertise, interests and talents of highly skilled volunteers to lead and influence in communities across the nation.
Participants represent varied backgrounds and areas of expertise including academia, government and public policy, business and nonprofits and communications and marketing.
Launched in December 2012, the program includes a combination of virtual and face-to-face sessions that will meet four times in 2013.
Throughout the course of the program, participants will select one of three tracks through which to explore and build on their leadership strengths: advocacy, community leader and external representative.
The 2013 class will not only deepen their strategic understanding and skills in these areas, but will also serve as the Volunteer Leadership Institute think-tank, helping AARP build a meaningful and challenging curriculum for classes to follow.
Dr. McAlpine will work closely with AARP Alabama and the volunteers throughout the state to help develop teams to advance the mission of AARP. They also address home, hunger and nutrition issues and spread the word about retirement tools that help people plan for retirement at any age. They advocate nationally and at the state level for the over-50 population.
Currently, Dr. McAlpine, the retired president of Snead State Community College, is President of the Huntsville/Madison County AARP Chapter #1023. He is married to Dr. Helen T. McAlpine, president of J. F. Drake State Technical College in Huntsville, and they are the parents of one daughter, Carla McAlpine-Franklin, and a son-in-law, Shoan Franklin. He is a member of First Missionary Baptist Church, and his involvement in professional and community organizations is numerous.
