DEMOPOLIS-Every school in the Demopolis City School System is getting ready for its annual “School Fest” events on May 7, 2004. The four different schools have a wide arrangement of games, crafts, and other events lined up for their students.

Principal Mary Glass said Westside Elementary School has planned a lot of different activities for its “Schoolfest Fun Day”. Here are some of the activities and crafts lined up for the children and they include a concession stand, create a cookie, tattoos, face painting, t-shirt walk, Mardi Gras bead walk, moonwalk, giant slide, obstacle course, three additional blow-up activities, golf cart rides, hayride, mural, and bubbles.

“This year’s Schoolfest Fun Day is shaping up to be one of the best ever at Westside,” Glass said.

She said the events will start in the morning and the children will go through the different events one grade at a time. She also said the reason they go one grade at a time is because it is easier to control all the children when they are split up.

“The cost for this year’s event will be $10 and this will ensure the child a day full of fun and activities,” Glass said.

Principal Tony Speegle said U.S. Jones Elementary School has planned a lot of things for its “Schoolfest Fun Day”, but some of the old favorites are back as well. U.S. Jones is the defending champion for raising money from their Schoolfest event.

Here are some of the activities the students can look forward too and they include cake walk, dunking booth, general store, field day activities, beach ball volleyball, face art, fishing pond. He said the activities will start at 12:30 p.m. and end at 2:30 p.m.

“We cram a lot into in the two hours,” Speegle said.

Principal Clarence Jackson said Demopolis Middle School’s “Schoolfest Fun Day” use to be an all day event, well this year the school has decided to have a Miss DMS Pageant on April 30 and then have a half a day of activities on May 7.

The Miss DMS Pageant should be a highly contested event and there are already 40 girls signed up to participate. The pageant will start at 9:00 a.m. until about 11:00 a.m.

Some of the activities planned for the half a day that starts at 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. include a seventh versus eighth grade basketball game boys and girls, sack lunches, taking pictures, bingo, ring toss, and turning the computer lab into a game room.

Principal Ronald Roberts said Demopolis High School has already had most of its activities including selling the official “Schoolfest Fun Day” T-shirts, selling catfish plates, and the DHS Drama Classes performance of the “Taming of the Shrew.”

“The catfish plates went over very well with the citizens of Demopolis. We sold around 1,340 plates at $6 each,” Roberts said.
