January unemployment increases in Marengo County

Marengo County’s unemployment rose by 1.7 percent from December to January, according to numbers released Monday.
Marengo’s jobless rate now stands at 10.4 percent, up from 8.7 percent in December. January’s numbers represent 790 county residents out of work.
Statewide, unemployment increased slightly to 6.9 percent from 6.8 percent in December. That is down from 7.3 percent in January 2012.
Counties with the lowest unemployment were Shelby at 5.4 percent, Blount at 6.4 percent and Madison at 6.6 percent.
Counties with the highest unemployment were Wilcox at 17.4 percent, Lowndes at 14.5 percent and Bullock, Perry and Dallas at 13.9 percent.
