Civic center rental fees increased

The cost to rent the Demopolis Civic Center will be going up for the first time since 1999.
The city council approved the rate increases during Thursday evening’s meeting, saying they were needed to help offset upkeep.
Public Works Director Mike Baker told the council during its last meeting that issues with heat, air conditioning, floors, windows and appliances are regular occurrences.
The costs for social events like weddings and reunions will go up to $500 from $250. The price for commercial uses will go up to $600.
Nonprofits could use the building for $250 if there was food served or $100 if not. There will also be fees for set-up and clean-up if needed.
Councilman Bill Meador said the rate changes gets the city closer to breaking even on the civic center.
“Nobody likes to pay more, but the city is losing thousands every year,” Meador said.
Baker estimates civic center maintenance outpaces revenue generated from rental fees by 4-to-1.
