LIVINGSTON-The Sumter County Commission voted Monday to allow the corrections to the new $4.6 million Sumter County jail to be made before the final moving process begins on Thursday, July 1. After three years of planning and construction, the Sumter County Commission finally has their new state of the art jail.

Sumter County Commissioner Ronnie Beard started a motion to approve the corrections that they pointed out during their recent tour of the new facility. There are just a few minor additions and corrections that needed to be made to the jail, he said.

The Commission also approved a request from Sumter County Sheriff Johnny Hatter to purchase a new vehicle because they lost a car earlier this year. Hatter has about $14,000 in the budget for the purchase of a new car, plus he has $7,000 from the insurance agency.

“He will still be a little short, so I think we should make up the difference with the general fund,” Beard said.

A Sumter County resident presented a claim that the county took some limestone base from her property back in the past and had a verbal agreement with the county engineer to maintain her road.

The commission listened to the claims and Beard said that he remembered the woman from a few years ago claiming the same thing and the commission voted to allow the repairing of her street.

“We repaired her road last time,” Beard said, “I make a motion we repair her road because she had a verbal agreement with the county.”

The commission agreed to honor the woman’s claims and repair her road.
