TUSCALOOSA – What the sixth inning taketh away from Demopolis, it giveth back Saturday night, as West Alabama Post 29 defeated Tuscaloosa Post 34 9-1 in the American Legion Senior Division 2 Tournament.

West Alabama clung to a 4-1 lead headed into the sixth inning of play Saturday night, when the sixth inning curse struck again. But this time, Demopolis was not its victim.

Two errors in the sixth would be all that West Alabama would need to turn a 4-1 game into a 9-1 nightmare for Tuscaloosa’s Post 34. West Alabama would score five unearned runs off the two costly Post 34 errors in a six-run sixth inning.

West Alabama’s Clint Moody would lead the way in the sixth with his two-run homer, while Blake Butler would double and drive in two runs.

Other hitters for West Alabama included William Meador, who singled in both the fourth and sixth innings, driving in two runs. Chad Schroeder added the mix as well with a double and single that would drive in two runs for West Alabama.

UWA freshman pitcher, Matt Chambless (5-0) picked up the win for West Alabama, as he went seven innings allowing one run on five hits with 4K’s.

The two teams were scheduled to go head-to-head again on Sunday in the tournaments championship round. But heavy rain would leave behind an unplayable field and officials would decide to end the game.

Both teams did qualify for this week’s American Legion State Tournament in Demopolis and are sure to settle up before it’s all over with.
