Kevin Deal is the youngest son of Mr. Billy and Faye Deal. Born in Dothan, he moved to Demopolis at the tender age of 6 years old. He grew up playing youth league baseball during the summers and in the fall played in the newly formed “Tiny Tigers” football league. Kevin was a standout in both and when he was twelve his football team the “Troopers,” won the league. Coach Wilson took the team to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, to play a game against what turned out to be a much larger and older football team.
When Kevin was 15, the All-Star Baseball team traveled to Huntsville to play at University of Alabama-Huntsville baseball field. Word had gotten around that Demopolis had a kid that hit a lot of home runs throughout the season including the All-Star games leading into that tournament. As the Demopolis All-Stars were walking to the dugout a fan sharply said, “I don’t care how good he is, he ain’t hitting one out of this park.” In his first at bat, Kevin promptly hit the ball out of the park, over the 375 feet sign.
Kevin attended Demopolis Academy where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. In football, he was selected as the captain by his teammates. He earned, APSA All-District, 1978, and APSA All-District, 1979. He was recognized as the “Tuscaloosa News Back of the Week” for his play against Edgewood Academy, 1979. He was selected to play for the North Squad in the APSA All-Star Game, 1979 (APSA – Alabama Private School Association). In basketball, he was named the “MVP” his sophomore, junior and senior years earning “All-Tournament” selection in the Warrior Invitational Basketball Tournament, 1979. He was named the Most Outstanding Senior Athlete at Demopolis Academy 1980.
Troy State University signed Kevin to a football scholarship in 1980. Kevin played three seasons, 1980-82, for the Trojans until injuries finally took their toll on him. He joined the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity and in 1984, earned a degree in business and marketing.
Kevin and his wife Jonean have one daughter, Lauren Deal Schroeder, and two grandchildren, Michael Boyd and Lillian Schroeder. Kevin works in “Foundation Building Materials Sales” and currently lives in Montgomery.
